About

Hey guys! I wanted to make a short page giving you the basics of how I ended up in Romania for six months. :) I know it's kind of long, so just read the "Why?" and "How?" sections if you're pressed for time...they're the most important.

About the "six months in Romania" thing.........

WHO? My name is Maria. I'm 17 years old and just graduated high school a year early. I love mission work and writing, so that's why I made a blog. :)

WHAT? While in Romania, I'll be working as an intern for Stepping Forward Ministries. This is a ministry that serves orphans and other at-risk kids in the capital city of Bucharest, Romania. They also work with other missionaries in the country. A huge part of their ministry is summer camps in the countryside for these children. Groups of kids come to the camp for a week at a time, and there are about 8 weeks of camps.

WHEN? I'll be in Romania from May 23-November 20.

WHERE? During summertime, I'll mostly be at the camp in the remote countryside of Romania. On weekends, I may be in Bucharest. In the fall, I will mainly be in Bucharest, with possibly some trips to camp if necessary.

WHY? I am in Romania for half of my year because I am in love with these kids and the ministry that serves them. I firmly believe that this is where God wants me to be this year.

HOW? So, how did I get involved with Stepping Forward? Well, 10 years ago my dad got transferred to Romania to work on a few of their airplanes (he's an engineer). While in Romania, we met Steve and Cami Mather through our church. They were building a camp for orphans way out in the countryside. We visited this camp several times while in Romania and always admired it and the Mather's passion for the kids who would be coming. When we left Romania in late 2007, we kept in touch with the Mathers. In 2010, my dad went on a construction trip to the camp to help build a cabin. In 2013, my family went for two weeks as staff for the camp. I loved working there so much that I came back in 2014 for four weeks and in 2015 for eight weeks. I think back in 2013 was when I decided to take a gap year and go to Romania instead of college. Since then, I've been studying the Romanian language in school so that I could interact with the kids more fully.

That's pretty much the whole story behind my mission trip this year. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them below. :)

-Maria
